Assistant Coaches

Romans 15:17-19 HCSB -Therefore I have reason to boast in Christ Jesus regarding what pertains to God. 18 For I would not dare say anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to make the Gentiles obedient by word and deed

According to Paul, Christ’s greatest accomplishment through him was that Jesus made those in Paul’s mission field obedient to the Gospel through his speech and behavior among them.  Because Paul knew that it was Jesus doing the work through him, there was no arrogance or spiritual pride in celebrating his ministry accomplishments.  Paul was simply fulfilling the Great Commission within the sphere God gave him by the power of God working through him.  What’s not to talk about or celebrate?  Christ is the Head (coach) and we are members of His body (assistant coaches) in the eternal ‘competition’ to win souls.  Each win is worth celebrating.  Like Paul, we are charged with the same Great Commission from Jesus Christ to go and make disciples.  Disciples are made by coaching - with our words and by our deeds (actions).  This requires time, relationship, risk, boldness, love, skill, character, wisdom, correction, and much persistence.  But the eternal reward of the mission is worth the work.  We are called to be witnesses, yet we have to actively work with and coach others in order to make them into successful disciples, students, and lifelong followers of Jesus in every part of their lives. Most often, this happens in relationship - sharing your life in word and deed.

What newer believers can you think of who God may want to make into mature, obedient disciples using your words and actions?  Will you go beyond just inviting people to a church service/group/event, and let God use the power of your words and actions to help them know God more?  Think of one person you can start helping today, then go for it.

Mark 16:15-17 NIV - He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues…
