Spiritual Adoption Principles - No Returns or Exchanges

Romans 8:14-15 ESV -  For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

1 John 5:19 NLT - We know that we are children of God and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.

Imagine living as a citizen of ancient Rome where the law gave fathers absolute and total authority over the family.  This authority applied throughout the fathers’ lives and was not changed just because the children became adults.  The children were vital to a Roman family’s future.  Because of this, Roman adoption would often occur as one father would transfer his role and power over his child to another man.  Adopting adults (or nearly adults) was the main method.  Consider the view of the Roman adoption principles that the Apostle Paul used to teach spiritual reality in Christ to the church at Rome.  In the eyes of the law, the adopted son was permanently the son of his new father.  In essence, and unlike many adoptions of troubled kids today, there was no sending a kid back if he had “issues”.  Have you ever felt insecure of fearful that God would reject you (“send you back”) after He adopted you - all because you may have “issues” that you know annoy or upset Him?  If we are secure in our Father’s hand (authority/power), why would we fear that our identity as children of God might not be permanent?

John 10:27-33 NIV - My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” 31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” 33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

If no one can separate us from the love and power of our adoptive Father in Heaven, then the only danger would be if we were to turn away from God.  What can you do to protect your faith and avoid an unbelieving heart?  Will you commit to the ministry of DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT to help yourself and others avoid becoming deceived or hardened against God?  How vital is it to hold firmly to our first love, to our original faith conviction as disciples?

Hebrews 3:12-14 NIV - See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end.
