Tormenting Thoughts, Part 2 - “Angry Birds”

Romans 8:5 NLT - Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.

As battles may rage in the mind, the concern about one’s thoughts being “dominated” by his sinful nature can be troubling.  Those who have perfectionistic or legalistic tendencies may end up having a very harsh, miserable form of Christianity since they cannot live 100% above the plague of sinful thoughts entering their minds.  Yet this verse indicates something very helpful to remember: even Christians who have been transformed by God still have a sinful nature.  This is why there is an absolute need for God’s Spirit to take over control in regard to thoughts that will naturally drift toward the negative, the lustful, or the wicked.

Consider the common illustration: “Thoughts are often like birds - you cannot keep them from swooping at your head, but God will give you the power to keep them from building nests”.  Agree or disagree?  If bad thoughts have been “nesting” in your head, what factors do you believe are contributing to this?  Do you realize that these “bird thoughts” that you must shoo away do not mean that you have a mind dominated by your sinful nature?

Psalm 119:50 NKJV - This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.
