Acts 2:4, 16-17 ESV
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance… 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
On the Day of Pentecost, those in the early church experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit accompanied by the miraculous sign of speaking in languages they had never learned. This experience recurred elsewhere in the Book of Acts (See also Acts 8; Acts 10; and Acts 19). Peter explained that this “outpouring” of God’s Spirit, accompanied by signs and wonders, had been predicted in the Hebrew Bible. He preached the Gospel of Christ to a crowd who had been so perplexed by the church speaking with tongues, and 3000 new believers were then baptized! Today, tens (and likely hundreds) of millions of Christians across denominational lines have enjoyed a similar “Pentecostal experience” in terms of being filled with the Holy Spirit accompanied by the miracle of speaking with other tongues or languages. Despite the unbiblical excesses, abuses, misuses, and blatant weirdness by some people and groups, the Holy Spirit still operates in legitimate demonstrations of such power and will continue to do so until Christ returns (1 Corinthians 1:7).
Remember: the Holy Spirit will ultimately point people to a Person (Jesus Christ) more than simply an experience. However, is it possible that this supernatural experience still intrigues people today like it did on the Day of Pentecost?
