Ephesians 5:17-20 NIV - Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
What is the will of God? While there are many Scriptures that address this concept, consider this foundational fact of the Christian life: It is God’s will for us to continually live a Spirit-filled, Spirit-controlled life. But how? Ephesians 5 & 6 detail part of what that looks like, and the Book of Acts certainly records the miraculous aspects of being filled with the Holy Spirit; however, consider these ways of faithful interaction with God to help you live a Spirit-filled, Spirit-controlled daily life - at home, at work, and everywhere…
Seek understanding of the holy rather than folly (foolishness). We go where we’re looking. Understanding God’s will is going to be difficult if not impossible if one’s life is wasted in foolish pursuits.
Avoid intoxication completely as it always pollutes rather than purifies your life. What most easily tempts to addict your mind with it’s poison? Alcohol? Drugs? Gluttonous eating? Internet addiction?
Sing for spiritual success. Verse 19 indicates that a Spirit-filled life is directly impacted by the songs we sing and speak to God and one another. Would that not indicate that our spiritual condition is either influenced or reflected by the songs that we willfully allow to dominate our thoughts? Songs are teaching tools. A Spirit-filled life will declare songs that teach others truth about God and His wisdom.
Be thankful. Complaining, entitlement, victim-mentality are all actions that diminish the joy of the Lord and a Spirit-controlled life. Gratitude is key to joy. Thanksgiving humbly attracts God’s Spirit in power and grace. For what can you train yourself to be thankful to God every day? Be intentionally thankful!
Colossians 3:16 NIV - Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
