Acts 2:42-43 ESV - And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
koinonia meta Theos - koinonia met allelon: fellowship with God - fellowship with one another
The original church was characterized by it’s devotion to God first and foremost. How would you describe the Christian devotion level those with whom you have the closest fellowship?
2 Corinthians 6:14 NKJV - Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
Even though we are called to reach those in the world with the gospel, there are Biblical warnings about the fellowship of spiritual darkness and light. If “birds of a feather flock together”, do those in your “flock” mainly promote righteousness of lawlessness in you? Do they even claim to be devoted to Jesus Christ?
Ephesians 5:6-11 NKJV - Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
Again the themes of darkness versus light are common in the New Testament. Though God may love all and desire them to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, some people simply prefer darkness because their deeds (speech, attitudes, actions) are evil. How do you think God intends for you to expose the unfruitful works of darkness without diminishing your witness or the reputation of Christianity? How might this apply to those who attend church yet live as children of disobedience?
1 John 1:5-7 NKJV - This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
If we are to have fellowship with God, we will have life-giving fellowship with others in the church. What comes to mind when you read about this connection between our walking in the light with our fellowship with the church, and the ongoing cleansing of our sins?
Proverbs 27:17 NIV - As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. How spiritually healthy are you as a friend to others?
How spiritually healthy are your friends in your circle of fellowship? Do your conversations and ideas reflect a Christ-focus and mission-focus…or do you find those conversations awkward with your closest relationships? Whose true spirituality and depth of discipleship do you respect? What can you do to add them into your iron-sharpening fellowship circle?
