PRAYING THE LORD’S PRAYER
Luke 11:1 NIV - One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of his disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray…”
Matthew 6:9-13 NIV - “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
“Our Father in heaven…”
CONNECT WITH GOD RELATIONALLY
Romans 8:15 NLT - So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
God loves for we Christians to call Him our Father. Approach God relationally - like the intimacy of a child with a loving parent, and thank Him for the relationship you get to have with Him.
“Hallowed be Your Name…”
WORSHIP GOD’S NAME
Proverbs 18:10 MSG - God’s name is a place of protection— good people can run there and be safe.
What are some of the names God reveals about His identity in Scripture?
- The LORD, my Righteousness: God makes me clean
- The LORD, my Sanctifier: God has called me and set me apart
- The LORD, my Healer: God can heal me spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, physically
- The LORD, my Banner of victory: God has defeated the enemy of my soul
- The LORD, my Shepherd: God leads me, guides me, speaks to me, feeds me, corrects me
- The LORD, my Peace: God is peace in every storm or trial I face
- The LORD, my Provider: God determines and supplies my needs
“Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…”
PRAY GOD’S AGENDA FIRST
Luke 12:30-31 NCV - All the people in the world are trying to get these things, and your Father knows you need them. 31 But seek God’s kingdom, and all your other needs will be met as well.
Some of God’s chief priorities in Scripture:
- Love, faith, hope, and unity in and among all in His Church
- Saving the lost
- Guidance for those in authority in the home, the church, the workplace, the nations
- His will revealed to, and accomplished in, us (giving the understanding, desire, ability to do it)
“Give us this day our daily bread…”
DEPEND ON GOD FOR EVERYTHING
Psalm 121:2 NLT - My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!
Ask God for what you want and need (humbly, not with entitlement). Trust Him for the answer, in which He will provide it according to His will and timing.
“Forgive us our debts [trespasses, sins] as we forgive our debtors [those who wronged us]…”
GET YOUR HEART RIGHT WITH GOD AND PEOPLE
1 John 1:9 NIV - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Romans 12:18-19 NIV - If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
Matthew 6:14-15 NIV - For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Ask God to check your heart and motives. Ask Him to use His word to reveal areas where you need to change. Receive His forgiveness for any area that God brings to mind.
Forgive anyone who has offended you in any way. You can even forgive people in advance or those who you may never be able to see again. Ask God for the grace to forgive those who are not sorry so that you are free from the torment and poison of grudges and bitterness that can kill your spiritual life.
2 Corinthians 7:10 NLT - For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.
“And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one…”
ENGAGE IN SPIRITUAL WARFARE
Ephesians 6:12-13 NLT - For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.
1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NLT - If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
Take your stand against the enemy of your should and fight the good fight of faith. (See Ephesians 6:14-18). Replace the lies told to you with the truth of the word of God.
“For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever…”
EXPRESS FAITH IN GOD’S ABILITY
Jeremiah 32:17 NCV - Oh, Lord God, you made the skies and the earth with your very great power. There is nothing too hard for you to do.
End your prayer time by reminding yourself of God’s ability. Return to declarations of faith and praise to your Father and King.
“All rulership in my life belongs to You, O God my King.”
“All power I need flows from You, O God my Creator.”
“All victory that I will ever enjoy is complete in You, O God, my Savior”
